Undergraduate Research

It may not be possible for every student who graduates from our forensic science program at IUPUI to get involved in research, but we try and involve as many students as possible. Below are listed some of the opportunities we provide:

We have a capstone experience that is required of all students in the FIS program. This can be fulfilled in a number of ways:

Many students do an internship. This is taken at a practice crime lab. These internships most often involve some sort of research project that will benefit the student and the host lab. More information on this can be seen on the “BS Degree” page of this site. Students can do laboratory research with a faculty member in the program for their capstone Students can do a no-laboratory research project with a faculty member for their capstone. The FIS program participates in a number of summer research programs including McNair, and SROP (student research opportunities program). These permit college students to do research projects with faculty and get a stipend. There are also summer opportunities for honors students. Sometimes faculty in the program have grants that employ students to do research. Often these are undergraduate students who are paid for their work. This is a great opportunity for undergraduate students to get research experience. These positions are open to students in all classes, from freshman to senior.

Faculty sometimes have unfunded research projects that are ongoing. These are sometimes used to gather data for a grant application or for a book. Undergraduate students often fill these positions.
